Still got a paper driving licence? Replace it on time!
Time flies. Do you sometimes look back nostalgically at your paper driving licence, and then you look at the photo? Then perhaps this is the moment to replace the pink paper with the plastic card (which every 'graduated' driver in the EU has received since 2013). "Is it compulsory?", you are no doubt wondering now. Find out now.

When will the paper driving licence expire?
Let's face it: one day you will have to say goodbye to your paper driving licence - at the latest in 2033. Until then, paper driving licences remain valid in Belgium and the EU, but you may well be required to apply for a new licence before then. Perhaps you recognise yourself in one of the following situations?
- you have lost your driving licence
- your driving licence has been stolen
- Your driving licence is damaged or no longer legible
- your driving licence has been revoked by a foreign authority
- You no longer look like your photo
Corona haircut
If the competent authorities consider that your photograph is too old and therefore your driving licence is no longer valid, you will not get away with it. You don't have to worry about a corona haircut or the beard you have grown over the past few months. The authorities will also turn a blind eye to a (new) pair of glasses. But the chance that you no longer sufficiently resemble the photo on your driving licence - which is now at least eight years old - is of course quite real.
Administrative fine
Have you, at home or abroad, been issued with an administrative fine because your paper driving licence* is no longer considered valid? Then you can appeal and a legal expenses insurance for motor vehicles (depending on the chosen formula) will cover the legal costs and your lawyer's fees. Although, of course, prevention is better than cure.
*In addition to a valid driving licence, you must always carry your white insurance card.
One legal expenses insurance is not like another
Whereas the most comprehensive formulas provide guarantees for all possible disputes relating to the insured motor vehicle (e.g. disputes with the garage, manufacturer or leasing company), limited policies will only intervene in case of a traffic accident.
